Pat Maroon comes to mind when I hear all this.

And Tommy Maninno

And Devereaux Heshmatpour

no . .wait . .that was 20 years Wink

Nahh, once I saw 2 games of Derereaux I never knew that Jesse Barfield wannabe would be an impact player. Maroon had talent and I trust the Windsor brass that Czinder has some talent as well.

Campbell is at the Dallas summer camps. These type of 2 day camps is more for getting the young draft picks out there so the coaches have a better idea where they are at in development and see who will get an invite to the main camp.

from Windsor Star

Michael Nishi is taking nothing for granted.

After spending half a season with the Windsor Spitfires, Nishi would seem to have the inside track for a roster spot in 2010-11.

"I think Nishi would have a leg up, but we'll wait for training camp to see what happens," Spitfires head coach Bob Jones said.

The No. 1 spot in goal is clear for the Spitfires this season with Jack Campbell, who was a first-round pick by the NHL's Dallas Stars, coming on board.

Nishi is hoping to grab the backup role, but he'll be challenged by Josh Malecki and possibly Zack Vespe.

"I won't underestimate anyone," the 16-year-old Nishi said.

Nishi has put time in with the Spitfires, but Malecki has worked with Campbell.

"I've skated with (Campbell) at the national camp," said the 17-year-old Malecki, who was Windsor's 11th-round pick in 2009. "It was a great experience to play with him."

Malecki works out at the University of Michigan and said he still has college options, but he's not thinking that way.

"The goal's to come here (to Windsor)," the six-foot, 200-pound Malecki said.

The Detroit Compuware grad knows his biggest battle will be with Nishi.

"(Nishi) is a great goaltender, but it just means I have to work harder," Malecki said.

The 16-year-old Vespe, who was a ninth-round pick in this year's draft, is expected to get experience in junior B and Spitfires general manager Warren Ryc-hel said overager Troy Pas-singham will be here for camp, but the club hopes to work out a trade where he can get more playing time.

That means Nishi and Malecki will battle it out to back up Campbell.

Nishi filled in as the club's backup last year when Josh Unice was injured and then let go.

He went 2-0-0-1 with a 2.85 goals-against average and .861 save percentage, but was sent to junior A Georgetown after Windsor acquired Philipp Grubauer.

Back with Georgetown, Nishi was 12-3-1-1with a 2.53 goals-against average and .915 save percentage in the regular season and also got into six playoff games.

"It gave me a lot of experience and I want to bring that to this year," Nishi said of his time in Windsor.

Bigger and stronger at six-foot and 160 pounds, Nishi knows the club wants to field its best lineup whether that's the 12th forward, sixth defenceman or backup goaltender.

"I have to continue to get better," Nishi said. "I'm just expecting to do as well as I can and work as hard as I can and see what happens."

from Democratic and Chronicle.com

Rochester's tiny influence on the Ontario Hockey
League will grow a bit larger next season.

Bryan Deeley, a defenseman from Pittsford, is
expected to sign with the defending Memorial Cup
champion Windsor Spitfires.

Deeley will fill in when Windsor needs a
defenseman, said his father, Steve, but is expected
to play most of his games for Maksymum Hockey's
new Junior A team.

"With some good coaching, we think he has a real
good chance to be a professional hockey player,"
said Spitfires general manager Warren Rychel, who
played 408 NHL games in his career.

Deeley, 16, played last season with the Syracuse
junior program. Rychel likes Deeley's physical style
and competitiveness.

If Khokhlachev reports along with Czarnik to go along with their returning core (Ellis, Fowler and hopefully Cantin on the blueline) then I would imagine Rychel must already have some players targeted that he feels will put them in a position to make it three in a row. A lot will change between now and the start of the season but their line up, if all return that are expected to is starting to shape up nicely.

Spits poised to land talented Russian
By Jim Parker, The Windsor StarJuly 29, 2010 11:02 PM The Windsor Spitfires are days away from cashing in on a major gamble.

Two trades moved the Spitfires up to No. 23 in last month's Canadian Hockey League Import Draft and the club landed Russian phenom Alexander Khokhlachev.

The 16-year-old Khokhlachev is under contract with Spartak, but Russian agent Alexei Dementiev expects things to be cleared up in the next week to enable him to join the Spitfires.

"He's with Spartak right now at camp," Dementiev said from Moscow. "He's signed until August. They're releasing him Aug. 4. We'll sign the documents Aug. 5."

If all goes according to plan, Dementiev expects Khokhlachev to arrive in Windsor by Aug. 15.

"Yes, sure," Dementiev said.

The six-foot, 176-pound Khokhlachev is a highly skilled centre that North American Central Scouting already has rated No. 8 overall for the 2011 NHL Draft.

"It's big," Spitfires general manager Warren Rychel said of securing Khokhlachev. "I'm sure there'll be some adjustment, but by Christmas I'm sure he'll be going."

Spartak's potential release of Khokhlachev is unexpected considering Russian players are the hardest for Canadian Hockey League teams to secure.

It's even tougher with Khokhlachev having not been drafted by an NHL team.

"We're surprised," Dementiev said. "That's very unusual and we're appreciative that (Spartak officials) understand what the player needs and what he wants. (Spartak) will retain his rights if he goes back to Russia."

Playing in the Kontinental Hockey League sponsored Russian Junior League, Khokhlachev had 15 goals and 40 points in 51 games last season, but was outstanding at the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge.

Khokhlachev led the Russian team in scoring and was second in tournament scoring with five goals and 13 points in six games and named to the all-star team.

"He's the kind of player you look for in the playoffs and overtime," Dementiev said.

"He can score the goal. He's a very good player. He's very strong and his shot is very accurate."

With several graduations at forward, Khokhlachev's arrival will provide hope for Windsor's dream of an unprecedented third straight Memorial Cup title.

"We're going to be OK," Rychel said.

Dementiev, who worked as an NHL scout for Ottawa, Washington, Nashville and Boston, has known Rychel for years and knows the club's recent success can be a boost for Khokhlachev's NHL hopes.

"I know they've won two Memorial Cups," Dementiev said. "(Andrei) Loktionov played there and it was good for him.

"Only two Russian players have their name on the Memorial Cup. (Alexander) Radulov (in 2006 with the Quebec Remparts) and Loktionov. (Khokhlachev) wants to be the third."

I just found this reading Sportsnet column...

Quote:

FOWLER FAST-TRACKED
The Orange County Register notes the Ducks have signed 2010 top draft pick (12th overall) Cam Fowler to a three-year entry level deal in a sign that they intend to fast forward the 18-year-old's development into an NHL defenceman. It is also a sign that the club intends to give him a shot to win a job on the blue line this fall.

Often compared to recently retired captain Scott Niedermayer because of his skating, passing and on-ice vision, Fowler is seen as the Ducks' eventual power-play quarterback and potential top-pairing defender in time.

Take what you want from it... The Ducks don't have anyone other then Visnovsky to produce offense from back end.

Being "fast tracked" could mean several different things. I'm sure he'll see some exhibition games and maybe even his 8 regular games before a decision is made. Unless he's really bulked up over the summer, I think he'll get pushed around up in the NHL. There's no denying his talent level is at the NHL level already...but is he strong enough is the real question.

Only time will tell.

They just dealt Wisniewski to the Isles so now have Visnovsky, Festerling, Mikkelson, Lydman and Brookbank as there D-men. I'm guessing he's in a battle with Syvert, Sbisa, and Mitera for a spot on next years team.

Hope this is the right place for this without ruining anyone's day.

Bryan Deeley has been signed to an OHL contract and educational package as per In Play and the Spits Web page and facebook.

So this makes Webermin, Barber, Deeley, and who else as the fourth 93? Unless that's reserved...?

You can sign as many 93's as you want only a certain amount are allowed to play more than 10 games. Deeley is already signed to play elsewhere this upcoming year.

My mistake on the 94s v. 93s. Also thanks for the clarification on the players. I was under the impression that if they signed with all the bells and whistles, they were playing here, but apparently not the case.
